Notes: Dick Blau (b. 1943) is a photographer, filmmaker, and Professor Emeritus of film at UWM. He cofounded the school's department of Film, Video, Animation, and New Genres and served as its chair for twenty years (1979-1999). His own body of work includes a series of psychological portraits of his family members taken over the last fifty years (entitled Thicker Than Water.)

In this selection, Dick shares an anecdote about the role that his photography plays in his relationship with his partner, critical theorist Jane Gallop. The book he is referring to is Living With His Camera by Gallop, in which she analyzes his work in relation to key texts of photographic theory. Below is the photograph he is describing.

The full interview lasted 1.5 hours, in which time we discussed his life and career, the history of the UWM film department and the Milwaukee film scene, and his own photographic work. Click here for an in-progress transcript.

(We recorded in his studio overlooking the street, so please forgive the occurrence of a traffic sound.)
